Every ingredient in every formula was selected because it addresses a specific, measurable physiological problem — particularly the ones that extreme climates create.
We work with Swiss biotechnology laboratories and alpine botanical specialists to source and validate actives at pharmaceutical-grade standards. If we cannot explain exactly what an ingredient does and prove it works, it does not enter a formula.
UV Defence
Standard SPF was engineered for European summers. In the American Sun Belt, and in high-altitude equatorial environments, UV Index values routinely hit 11–12 — far beyond the conditions under which most luxury SPF products were validated.
SÉRÈNE's UV Defence complex goes beyond filtration. We deploy biological adaptation mechanisms — organisms that evolved to survive extreme UV exposure — alongside non-photosensitizing retinoid alternatives that let you address aging without amplifying sun damage.
PhytoCellTec™ Solar Vitis
Derived from the stem cells of a rare UV-resistant Chardonnay grape cultivar native to the Swiss Alps, PhytoCellTec™ Solar Vitis has spent millennia developing adaptive mechanisms against extreme solar radiation. These extracted stem cells are clinically proven to protect dermal stem cells — the skin's own regenerative reserve — from UV-induced damage and oxidative stress that accelerates visible aging.
Revinage™ Bioretinol
Traditional retinol is clinically photosensitizing — it makes skin dramatically more vulnerable to UV damage, rendering it counterproductive or outright harmful in extreme-sun climates. Revinage Bioretinol is a botanical retinoid derived from the Bidens Pilosa plant that delivers equivalent anti-wrinkle and collagen-stimulating efficacy with zero photosensitivity. It activates the same retinoid pathway without the liability.
Lumière SPF 50 Complex
Our SPF 50 system uses next-generation photostable European filter technology — Tinosorb S and M from BASF — that provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection without the hormonal disruption or rapid photodegradation of traditional chemical filters like avobenzone. Photostable means it doesn't break down in intense sunlight, maintaining full protection throughout a US summer afternoon.
Deep Hydration
Surface moisturisation is theatrical. The skin of a woman who spends her day moving between 45°C exteriors and 18°C air-conditioned interiors experiences trans-epidermal water loss at rates that standard moisturisers cannot compensate for — because they are depositing hydration on the surface, not restructuring the skin's ability to retain it.
SÉRÈNE's hydration actives work at a molecular level. We target the aquaporin channels that govern how water moves through the skin, the hyaluronic acid matrix that determines structural moisture, and the microbiome that regulates barrier integrity from within.
Dimethylsilanol Hyaluronate
A next-generation evolution of standard hyaluronic acid, Dimethylsilanol Hyaluronate combines silanol chemistry with hyaluronic acid's water-binding capacity. The silanol component enables actual tissue penetration — it doesn't sit on the skin's surface. Once absorbed, it restructures the skin's extracellular water-retention matrix, creating lasting hydration that survives air-conditioned environments that would strip standard formulations within hours.
KOMBUCHKA™
Derived from the fermentation of sweet black tea, KOMBUCHKA™ delivers a complex of organic acids and B-vitamins that actively nourish the skin's microbiome while simultaneously performing three distinct functions: it hydrates with a documented lipo-filling plumping effect, it protects collagen through its anti-glycation mechanism — preventing sugars from cross-linking and stiffening collagen fibers — and it provides antioxidant defence against free radical damage.
Squalane
Squalane is one of the most elegant ingredients in modern skincare for a precise reason: its molecular structure is virtually identical to the skin's own squalene — a primary component of human sebum. This biomimetic identity means it is absorbed instantly and completely, recognised by the skin as native lipid rather than foreign material. It reinforces the moisture barrier without heaviness, greasiness, or comedogenic risk, and is fully stable under UV exposure.
Cellular Regeneration
Extreme climates age the skin faster than any other environmental factor. Years of UV overexposure, chronic dehydration, and thermal stress accumulate into visible collagen loss, persistent hyperpigmentation, and structural density decline that can make a woman look a decade older than her chronological age.
Our regeneration actives address this at the cellular level — not by masking the effects, but by stimulating the biological processes that produce collagen, neutralise free radicals, and accelerate tissue repair. Marine Caviar Extract
Siberian sturgeon caviar extract contains an exceptional concentration of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, amino acids structurally analogous to human skin proteins, and nucleic acid precursors that support cellular repair and DNA synthesis. When applied topically, these compounds integrate into the skin's lipid bilayer, restoring membrane integrity, stimulating fibroblast activity, and delivering the building blocks of collagen synthesis directly to the dermal layer.
24K Gold Complex
At the nano-particle scale, gold is not decorative — it is biologically active. Gold nanoparticles penetrate the epidermis and act as a cellular energy catalyst, stimulating mitochondrial activity and accelerating the skin's own ATP production cycle. This directly increases the rate of cellular repair and regeneration. Gold also functions as a potent free radical scavenger and has documented anti-inflammatory properties, reducing chronic low-grade inflammation that is a primary driver of premature aging in extreme climates.
Micronised Diamond
At pharmaceutical-grade micronisation — particles under 10 microns — synthetic diamond powder performs a function that no other exfoliant can replicate: it physically removes the protein bonds between dead corneocytes with absolute precision, leaving no micro-tears in the skin surface. Simultaneously, its extreme refractive index creates an immediate optical brightening effect, reflecting light uniformly across the skin's surface to produce the luminosity associated with truly healthy skin.
Ascorbic Acid Complex
Stabilised Vitamin C in its two most bioavailable forms — essential for collagen synthesis, the most powerful antioxidant against UV-induced free radical cascades, and the only topical ingredient with proven ability to inhibit melanin production and fade existing hyperpigmentation simultaneously. Our stabilised delivery system maintains efficacy in warm climates where standard ascorbic acid degrades rapidly.
Keratoline™
Keratoline is a highly advanced enzymatic exfoliant derived from bacterial fermentation — specifically a serine protease enzyme that selectively digests the protein bonds holding dead surface cells without any mechanical abrasion whatsoever. Unlike physical scrubs that create micro-tears, or acid exfoliants that indiscriminately dissolve, Keratoline works with the skin's own natural desquamation chemistry to clear congestion and reveal clarity with no risk of sensitisation.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Niacinamide is among the most clinically evidence-backed actives in modern dermatology. At 5% concentration it measurably increases ceramide production — directly reinforcing the skin's barrier — reduces melanin transfer to reduce pigmentation, visibly minimises pore appearance, regulates sebum production, and inhibits the inflammatory pathways that cause redness and sensitivity. It is the ideal multi-function active for extreme-climate skin because it addresses multiple damage pathways simultaneously.

Microbiome
Modern dermatology has established a clear consensus: a compromised skin barrier is not a symptom of aging — it is its primary cause. When the lipid barrier fails, skin becomes chronically inflamed, loses moisture exponentially faster, and becomes susceptible to sensitisation from environmental aggressors that a healthy barrier would simply deflect.
In extreme climates, the barrier is under relentless daily assault. SÉRÈNE's barrier actives are specifically selected to rebuild what the environment destroys — restoring the lipid matrix, nourishing the microbiome population that regulates immune response, and providing the physical and biological armour the skin needs.
Native Shea Butter
Cold-pressed, unrefined shea butter in its native form — not the deodorised, bleached industrial variant used in mass-market products. Native shea retains its full complement of Vitamins A, E, and F alongside a rare class of triterpenoids with documented anti-inflammatory properties. It provides immediate physical comfort and acts as an occlusive barrier, preventing transepidermal water loss while its Vitamin A content supports cellular turnover and its Vitamin E delivers sustained antioxidant protection.
Vitamin E (Tocopherol)
Pure tocopherol — not the cheaper tocopheryl acetate used in most formulas, which requires conversion to become active and is largely ineffective topically. Tocopherol is the most potent naturally occurring lipid-soluble antioxidant, integrating directly into the cell membrane where it neutralises free radical chain reactions at their origin rather than after they have already caused cellular damage. It also significantly enhances skin's UV tolerance and accelerates tissue repair.
Aurora Cleansing Complex
Our Aurora Cleanser is built around a synergistic complex of three Swiss alpine and Mediterranean botanicals: stabilised Aloe vera for its polysaccharide hydration matrix, Centella Asiatica (also known as Cica) for its potent anti-inflammatory and wound-healing triterpenoids, and cold-pressed Rosehip oil for its naturally occurring trans-retinoic acid precursors and essential fatty acids that nourish the barrier during cleansing rather than stripping it.

These are not simply ingredients we have chosen not to use — they are compounds we have formally excluded because they are incompatible with extreme-climate skin health, carry unacceptable risk profiles, or undermine the barrier integrity our formulas are designed to restore.
Traditional Retinol
Clinically photosensitizing — renders skin more vulnerable to UV damage in intense sunlight. We use Revinage Bioretinol exclusively.
Parabens
Endocrine-disrupting preservatives with documented oestrogenic activity. All SÉRÈNE formulas use alternative preservation systems.
Synthetic Fragrance
A known contact allergen and a primary trigger for sensitisation in already-reactive skin. No added fragrance of any kind in any SÉRÈNE formula.
Mineral Oil
A petroleum-derived occlusive that prevents the skin from breathing and blocks the absorption of the active ingredients it shares a formula with.
SLS & SLES
Sulphate surfactants that strip the skin's natural lipid barrier, raising pH and causing the transepidermal water loss our formulas are built to prevent.
Avobenzone
A traditional UV filter with rapid photodegradation under high UV — losing up to 50% of its efficacy in direct sunlight within 90 minutes. Unacceptable for Gulf climates.
Formaldehyde Releasers
Preservative compounds including DMDM Hydantoin and imidazolidinyl urea that release formaldehyde over time — a known sensitiser and carcinogen.
Phthalates
Plasticising compounds with endocrine-disrupting properties, sometimes found in fragrance complexes. Excluded categorically from all formulations and all packaging materials.
